Preserving Sacred Stories: Historic Sites Foundation

Across the Midwest, tucked into small towns and cities, stand historic sites that have witnessed the unfolding of a sacred story—one that continues to shape Community of Christ today. The Community of Christ Historic Sites Foundation exists to ensure these places—and the stories they hold—are preserved, shared, and celebrated for generations to come.

Honoring the Past, Engaging the Present

As a nonprofit organization sponsored by Community of Christ, the Foundation works to protect and interpret several key historic properties. These include:

  • Plano Stone Church in Plano, Illinois
  • Joseph Smith III’s Liberty Hall in Lamoni, Iowa
  • Heritage Plaza in Independence, Missouri

Each location offers a unique glimpse into the early Restoration movement, church leadership, and the evolving journey of faith over time.

A Dream That Took Root

The Foundation’s story began with Bishop Russell Pearson, who had a vision of members and seekers walking a “Restoration Trail” to encounter the church’s history firsthand. That vision took shape in 1970 with the formation of the Restoration Trail Foundation, which became the Community of Christ Historic Sites Foundation in 2007 to better reflect the church’s current identity and mission.

Working Together to Preserve and Share

Today, the Foundation operates alongside Community of Christ staff and volunteers to care for these sacred spaces and bring their stories to life. A dedicated 15-member volunteer Board of Directors leads the Foundation, offering time, energy, and wisdom in support of this meaningful work.

Whether through events, tours, educational programming, or behind-the-scenes preservation efforts, the Foundation plays a vital role in keeping Community of Christ’s heritage alive.

Why It Matters

These aren’t just old buildings. They are spaces where faith was formed, where leaders were shaped, and where communities gathered to respond to the Spirit’s call. By preserving them, we ensure that the history of Community of Christ remains accessible—not just in textbooks or museums, but in the very places where it happened.
